What works to tackle inequalities by regulators, oversight and supervisory bodies
Regulators of services are often one step removed from the people who need and use these services, making it more challenging to identify how they can best address inequality. Tackling inequalities in health and care is a key priority for the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the regulator for health and adult social care services in England. Looking outside of the health and care sector and to other countries expands CQC’s ability to understand what good looks like, and what progress has been made by other regulators in tackling inequalities for those who need and use the services they regulate.
This podcast explores findings from a recent rapid literature review delivered for CQC by SQW (with support from The King’s Fund Library Service and Dr. Tammy Boyce) to provide learning and insights into what works to tackle inequalities by regulators from other sectors and countries.
Joining SQW Managing Partner and podcast host Joe Duggett are SQW’s Lauren Roberts and Jane Meagher, alongside Lucy Wilkinson from CQC, Max Edelstyn from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, and Naomi Nicholson representing the Institute of Regulation. The conversation covers:
- The implications of the report findings for regulators when considering how best to support the services they regulate to address inequalities
- What the ‘quick wins’ are for regulators seeking to tackle inequalities
- How findings from the report will be (and are being) used by our podcast guests.
