Understanding and evaluating early career dental professionals’ experiences and perceptions of the General Dental Council

The General Dental Council (GDC) is the statutory regulator of dental professionals in the UK. The GDC is keen to understand and explore the experiences and perceptions of and attitudes towards the GDC of early career dental professionals – namely those who have been registered to practice dentistry in the UK for five years or less.

This podcast explores findings from SQW’s research study which focused on this topic. The findings have been captured to inform the GDC’s ongoing and future activity with (and for) early career dental professionals, to help meet its regulatory objectives.

Joining SQW Managing Partner and podcast host Joe Duggett are Lauren Roberts and Carolyn Hindle from SQW, who led the research study. Also joining are colleagues from the GDC: Susanne Gibson, Senior Research Manager, and Joanne Rewcastle, Associate Director of Communications and Engagement. The podcast explores:

  • The GDC’s role and key activities, alongside why this research was commissioned, and the research approach used by SQW.
  • The key findings relating to early career dental professionals’ perceptions of the GDC, including factors influencing these perceptions.
  • The variation in feedback from different professional groups, including overall perceptions of the GDC, preparedness for practice, and wellbeing and anxiety levels.
  • The importance of exploring and capturing data relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), and key findings in respect of early career dental professionals’ awareness and perceptions of the GDC’s work around EDI.
