Martin Wain
Associate Director
Martin has conducted process and impact evaluations, policy studies, strategic support projects, and capacity development at the local, regional, national, and international levels. He has extensive experience designing and applying theory-based, mixed method data collection and analytical methods across the whole policy cycle, from the design and ex-ante stage (including formative evaluation), to implementation and delivery (including monitoring evaluation and learning frameworks and developmental evaluation), and ex-post assessment (including summative evaluation). He has also developed and delivered facilitation, intermediation, and training initiatives.
Martin’s work has focused on the framework conditions for inclusive and sustainable economic and social benefit. He is experienced in working with a range of clients and partners from national and local government, higher education institutions, research funders, international organisations, non-profit organisations, and private foundations in the UK and Ireland, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Prior to his career in research consultancy, Martin worked in local and regional public policy, supporting the development and delivery of economic strategies and innovation initiatives. He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester, where his thesis focused on sub-national innovation policy and governance networks (supervised by Prof. Jakob Edler and Prof. Philip Shapira). Martin also holds an MSc in Local and Regional Economic Development from the University of Dundee.
