Supporting Advanced Ceramics in the Midlands

The Strength in Places Fund (SIPF) is a UKRI programme that helps areas of the UK to build on existing strengths in research and innovation to deliver benefits for their local economy. It aims to: support innovation-led regional growth; and enhance local collaborations involving research and innovation.

SQW, in collaboration with CityRedi at the University of Birmingham, was commissioned by Lucideon to support the Midlands Industrial Ceramics Group (MICG) in preparing a Wave 2 SIPF submission. MICG partners aim to develop a world-leading industrial and academic R&D programme, contributing the creation of a cluster of new businesses in the Midlands and strengthening the supply chain in the region.

SQW undertook a programme of consultations to develop a logic model for the SIPF proposal and design the evaluation approach. We also estimated the beneficial economic impacts which could be created, including through opening up opportunities for an Advanced Ceramics Campus. Our estimates were included in the Advanced Ceramics Sector Profile.

In July 2021, it was announced that the MICG had secured £18.27 million from the SiPF. When combined with partner investment and the creation of new business opportunities, the programme will be worth £42.1 million.
