Wellbeing in Temporary Accommodation & Social Housing
SQW have been appointed by Homes England to better understand the wellbeing impacts that occur when households move from temporary accommodation into social housing.
This is particularly timely given the increasing numbers of households in temporary accommodation, which is placing an increasing burden on national and local government finances. As of March 2024, 117,450 households were living in temporary accommodation – the highest since records began (1998) – of which 63% were households with children[1].
SQW will be drawing and building on the existing evidence base to value any wellbeing impacts that occur when a household is moved out of temporary accommodation and into social housing. We will be developing a wellbeing framework, undertaking primary research with those living in temporary accommodation and social housing, and developing metrics that can be used to support business cases for this type of housing development.
It is expected that the outputs of the research will lead to a better understanding of how moving from temporary accommodation into social housing can improve wellbeing, and the wider impacts this can have on adults and children/young people. SQW will be working closely with Homes England, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), IFF Research and a team of associates to deliver this important study.
The study is expected to run until March 2025. For further details, please contact Lauren Roberts, SQW Projrect Director, via lroberts@sqw.co.uk, Stuart Wells, SQW Project Manager via swells@sqw.co.uk or Homes England via economic.appraisal@homesengland.gov.uk.
