I joined SQW in October 2023 after completing my undergraduate degree in Politics and Philosophy at LSE. While completing my dissertation, which focused on Levelling Up policy in my hometown of Bradford, I realised I wanted to apply and develop the skills I was learning in my future career. I was drawn to SQW because of the training opportunities it offered through the Research Consultant programme and its diverse project work.
Since joining, I have worked on a wide range of projects spanning all of SQW’s areas of work. This variety has helped me to determine what policy areas I’m most interested in. Projects I have particularly enjoyed include a rapid literature review into the effectiveness of Vision Based Monitoring Systems for the Care Quality Commission, the development of a strategic economic plan for Coventry and Warwickshire and research into coastal communities for Suffolk Council. Through work on these projects and others, I have gained practical experience of literature reviews, consultations, survey and monitoring data analysis and other desk based research.
SQW fosters an environment where I’ve received the time, training and support needed to develop my skills. Tailored training sessions at Research Consultant level covered topics like evaluation and theories of change, and tools including MaxQDA and Excel. These trainings have also provided me with the opportunity to visit colleagues in our Edinburgh and Manchester offices. Beyond formal training sessions, my development has been supported by my line manager and Research Consultant mentor, who have provided me with important guidance throughout my time as an Research Consultant. The culture at SQW encourages openness, with colleagues across all grades always willing to answer questions and offer support.
Since joining the SQW team, I’ve explored policy areas I hadn’t previously considered and developed skills I’d never tried before. From day one, I felt welcomed and encouraged to learn and grow in a supportive yet challenging environment.
