Development of the Full Business Case for the Kent and Medway Medical School
SQW was commissioned by Canterbury Christ Church University to prepare a business case for capital funding for the new Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS). This involved two commissions: the first (in 2018) to develop an Expression of Interest and Outline Business Case, and the second (in 2019) to prepare the Full Business Case.
The KMMS project involved the construction of Kent's first medical school. This was developed as a joint project by Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Kent. It involved the creation of 4,800 sq m of laboratory and teaching space within two new buildings (one on each university campus). This will support a medical school with an initial cohort of 107 undergraduate students, potentially rising to a maximum of 1,000 students at the Medical School by 2033/34.
The total capital cost of the scheme was estimated at £24.8 million. SQW prepared a Green Book-compliant Business Case, to secure £8 million from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership's Local Growth Fund towards these costs. This involved the preparation of all five cases (Strategic, Economic, Financial, Management and Commercial) to OBC and FBC level, as well as responding to requests for clarification and further information from the LEP's appointed Independent Technical Evaluator. The Full Business Case is available here.
The full £8 million requested was approved by the South East LEP. KMMS will enrol its first students in September 2020.
